Snowpocalypse 2016 Shows Need For Basement Protection

It seems like every year brings with it a major winter snowstorm in some area of the east coast. For 2016 so far, New York and the rest of the northeast was battered with double digit snowfalls in a blizzard that shut down a huge part of the region.

While it’s vital to stay warm and stay safe during periods like this, there’s something else that is often overlooked – protecting your home. Keeping your basement dry is something that’s incredibly important, and even more important during the winter months when heavy snowfalls and deep freezes can occur. Why is that? Several different reasons including:

  • Freezing temperatures can damage foundations, with moisture finding its way into tiny hairline cracks and then expanding as it freezes. This can open up wider cracks and cause significant damage. And in the weather we’ve had recently with freezes, thaws, and freezes again, it creates a cycle of damage that can do serious damage.
  • Snow melt can saturate the ground in a bigger way than even a heavy rain. When the ground becomes inundated with that much water it can pool against a foundation, finding its way into your home through any crevice.

And once that the damage occurs, it can lead to major problems and expensive repairs. Repairing a basement foundation can be costly, and mold remediation can add to the costs significantly. Add to that the simple fact that a damp basement can lead to serious health risks and damage personal property as well as your home value, and it becomes clear that you need to pay attention to this issue.

Prevention is a must, and as the winter snow starts falling it’s important that you have your home’s basement fully protected. That winter wonderland could be doing more damage to your home than you realize, and taking the steps to fight against this is a must.

We can help. Contact us at AA Action Waterproofing to give your basement a health checkup and ensure that it’s protected properly.
