Beating Basement Molds Before It Takes Over
Once you have moisture cleaned up, the next battle you’ll have to prepare to fight is one with mold. When it comes to basement molds, you don’t have a whole lot of time to prepare before the battle begins, and actions should be taken to beat the mold before it beats you within the first day or so after moisture has been cleaned. The executive director of the National Center for Healthy Housing, Rebecca Morley, states that you have a 24 to 36 hour window to work with before basement mold can really manifest itself in your space and begin spreading its spores throughout your area.
After you’ve cleaned up the moisture, the first step you want to take to beat the mold is taking everything plush or able to harbor water outside and in the sun to dry. You want to clear it out of the room as quickly as possible before mold begins to grow, and to use the sun to dry it out properly and thoroughly away from your space. If you have carpeting in the basement that cannot be removed, you’ll want to use a shop or wet vacuum to suck as much of the moisture as possible from the carpet as you want to eliminate wetness but will be unable to sit the carpeting outside.
Once all soaked property has been vacuumed or put out to dry, you’ll then want to use a dehumidifier to eliminate the moisture from the air, walls, and actual structure of your basement space. What a dehumidifier does is suck moisture from the air within a space, allowing the area to dry more quickly, and this can mean the difference between dry walls and walls soon experiencing mold growth.
