How To Distinguish Mold From Other Basement Stains

There are many things that can cause stains along the walls of your basement. Dirt, minerals, and salts can all cause staining. These common basement stains are relatively harmless. However, mold can be a sign of a larger structural issue, and present a serious hazard to the health and well-being of your family members. So it is important that you know how to tell the difference between harmless stains and dangerous mold growths.

What Does Mold Look Like?

Mold growth can be seen by a visual inspection of the basement wall. Molds will be blue green, blue, yellow, black, grey, or white. Mold will often appear to look fuzzy or hairy. It will grow in patches and maybe be different shades of colors. Mold will be slimy, damp, and may smear when touched. As mold gets older, it will look dry and powdery and will dust off the wall when touched. Usually the mold growth will be found on or near water stains.

Are The Conditions Right For Mold?

Mold will only be present indoors if there is moisture. So if you find a discoloration that you think may be mold, you need to check for other signs of moisture. First, check for any leaks or water stains, especially around the area you find the mold. You can usually also smell moisture in the air, so if you basement has a wet, musty smell, there may be moisture present. Next you can check for condensation along walls and windows by feeling for dampness. Finally, look for any other signs of moisture damage like warping or swelling along walls or door frames. If there is moisture present, you probably also have mold.

Check Your Allergies

One of the biggest signs that the stains along your basement walls are mold, is the presence of allergies. Do your allergies get worse when you go into the basement? Do they get better when you leave your house? Do you have trouble breathing at night when mold spores are most active? Then the stains are probably mold.
