3 Reasons Why Water Damage Can’t Wait

Having a wet or flooded basement is a nightmare for any homeowner. In fact, 98% of houses with basements will face some type of water damage within their life. That is why it is important to always keep an eye out for any signs of water damage in your home.

However, if you have already spotted the signs and figure it can wait, you may want to think again.

1. Electrical Damage

The majority of people know that water and electricity just do not mix. That is why it is important that any electrical appliances are kept away from water and moisture as much as possible. If water ends up seeping its way into your basement and reaches a source of electricity, the damage could be disastrous. So make sure to unplug or move any electrical appliances that could be in harm’s way of water and moisture. If your basement has been flooded to the point that water is getting into the electrical outlets, shut down the power in that area or even to the whole house before heading in.

2. Mold Growth

Mold can be a rather toxic substance that will grow and thrive in wet environments, such as a damp basement. Mold tends to carry quite a bit of bacteria and mildew along with it and cause respiratory problems for anyone who comes in contact with it. Unfortunately, mold is also incredibly hard to get rid of as well so it is often easier to prevent it than to remove it. So if you do have a wet basement, make sure to get it clean and dry within 24 to 48 hours after a flood to keep mold at bay.

3. Foundation Damage

Water damage not only puts your health at risk, but it can put your entire house at risk too. Even if the foundation of your home seem pretty solid at the moment, it can actually be quite vulnerable to water damage. Any water that has made its way into your home can cause cracks and even weaken the entire structure of your foundation. So if you began to spot cracks, you should take the steps to repairing it as soon as you can.
