Early Signs That You May Need Foundation Repair

Early Signs That You May Need Foundation RepairThe foundation of your home is one of the most important parts of the entire structure. Just about every other part of your home depends on a strong foundation in order to be both safe and fully comfortable for you and your family.

In most homes, it’s easy to forget about the foundation and to potentially neglect its needs. A foundation tends not to “complain,” and the signs that there may be foundation problems can be hard to catch.

However, there are a few things to be aware of. Most of these early signs can be easiest to spot in your basement, which can serve as a great “early warning system” for your entire foundation:

  1. Sloping FloorsIn Maryland and throughout much of the rest of the country, the basement typically has a natural slope in order to make cleaning easier. If you notice the slope becoming more pronounced, it could be a sign that you need foundation repair. Naturally, sloping floors in other rooms should also be investigated and could represent a serious problem.
  2. Exterior CrackingIn older structures, you might expect to see some cracking in brick walls. However, if there are new or worsening cracks, that can be a sign of a drainage issue or another problem that may be putting undue strain on your foundation. Large, deep cracks tend to be caused by issues that are more serious than ordinary soil contraction.
  3. Signs Of Interior Wall RotationWall rotation can cause damage that’s very likely to show itself around doors and windows. You can check for signs of interior wall issues in the room directly above your basement. You might also notice that the door itself warps or can no longer close properly. Rotation tends to cause damage all throughout the home.
