3 Signs It’s Time For Mold Remediation

Sometimes a mold problem is just on the surface. You spray on an appropriate cleaning fluid, scrub at the dark spots, and boom, problem solved. If you can stay on top of keeping your home clean and don’t have any problems with leaks or condensation, mold doesn’t have to be a major problem.

However, sometimes mold can sneak up on you, either because it starts in a place you don’t usually clean or because it takes place somewhere you can’t even see. Naturally, it can be hard to tell when this is the case, so here are three warning signs to watch for that may indicate you need to call in some professional help:

1. A Musty Odor

Every home tends to develop its own peculiar smell, but mold should never be a part of that scent. With hundreds of species out there, not every mold infestation smells the same, but it’s always pungent and unpleasant when you can smell anything at all. If you notice an unusual odor in a specific part of your home, try investigating the area for mold growths.

2. A Deeper Problem

Mold doesn’t just grow on the surface. It can also infiltrate porous materials like concrete, wood, insulation, and the cardboard surface of drywall boards. If you notice that mold will quickly grow back in an area you recently scrubbed, it’s likely because there’s a water leak in the area and there’s more mold growing beneath the surface. Try cutting a bit of the surface away to see whether the mold infestation goes deeper.

3. Poor Health

Certain mold species, collectively referred to as “black mold,” release spores containing a mycotoxin which can have an effect on humans who breathe them in. Symptoms include nausea, headaches, and assorted allergic reactions that can make it hard to live in your own home. If you clean up all the visible mold and continue to suffer these symptoms, then you definitely need to call in the professionals.
